Soil-Judging, Crops Contest Results Announced

Region IV Soil‐Judging Contest

Texas Tech University (TTU)—with the support of the TTU Davis College, the TTU Plant and Soil Science Department, student volunteers, and cooperating landowners—hosted the 2023 Region IV Soil‐Judging Contest on Oct. 19, 2023 in Lamb County, Texas. A total of 35 undergraduate students from Oklahoma State University, Tarleton State University, Texas A&M University, Texas A&M University–Kingsville, University of Arkansas, and West Texas A&M University participated in this contest.

The University of Arkansas took first place overall, had the first (Katie Jannson) and second (Jonathan Brye) highest individuals, and took first place for the team pit. West Texas A&M University took second place overall, had the fourth (Paden Markham) and fifth (Tessa Barrett) highest individuals, and placed second in the team pit contest. Texas A&M University took third place overall, and along with University of Arkansas and West Texas A&M, qualified for the National Soil‐Judging Contest in spring 2024. In addition, Texas A&M University–Kingsville placed third in the team pit contest and Tarleton State University had the third highest individual (Courtney Thom). 

Upper Midwest Collegiate Crops Contest

The Upper Midwest Collegiate Crops Contest sponsored by CSSA and ASA was held Oct. 14, 2023 at the University of Wisconsin (UW)–Platteville. The contest is in preparation for the national crops contests in Kansas City and Chicago on November 14 and 18, respectively. The team from UW‐Platteville placed first, followed by the University of Minnesota–Crookston and South Dakota State University.
